Are you asleep yet? |
|
자니? as a text message, sent late at night, is a whole cultural in-joke in
Korea – it's the stock opening line of a "u up?" text from an ex or a
would-be booty call, to the point that it's become a meme in its own right.
Opening the episode with it immediately signals what kind of message this is,
even before you read the rest.
|
It was 1:40 am |
I wondered how you were doing |
if you are missing me like I miss you |
or if you are seeing someone |
or if you are still mad at me |
or if you have forgiven me a little |
|
All of these lines are indirect (embedded) questions built with -는지/-았는지
("whether..."), all hanging off 궁금했고 ("I wondered") a few lines back –
grammatically it's one long sentence: "I wondered whether you missed me,
whether you'd moved on, whether you resented me, whether you'd forgiven me
a little..." Stacking clause after clause like this, without resolving any of
them, mirrors the anxious, spiralling nature of a message like this.
|
If I can see you again |
I wanted to ask you |
if you really are OK |
Sometimes I want to ask you |
When you go home alone around this time of the day |
if you had dinner |
or how you are feeling |
When I have no new texts in my inbox |
When you happen to walk by |
my shop that you always dropped by after work |
Or when you walk the street we walked together |
or eat the food we enjoyed together |
|
The -던 modifier (in 들리던, 걷던, 먹던) marks a habitual or ongoing action in
the past, distinct from the simple past modifier -(으)ㄴ – 먹던 음식 is
"food we used to/would eat," carrying a wistful, unfinished quality that
plain 먹은 음식 ("food we ate") wouldn't have. It's the natural choice for
this kind of nostalgic, list-of-reminders passage.
|
or come across someone who looks like me |
I want to ask you how you are holding up? |
|
참아내다 attaches -아/어 내다 to 참다 (to endure) – this auxiliary adds a
sense of "managing to get through [something difficult]," of successfully
seeing an effort to completion. 참아내다 is specifically "to manage to hold
back/endure," stronger than plain 참다 on its own.
|
Weren’t you feeling sorry at that time? |
Tell me |
Tell you what? |
Tell me anything |
I’m sorry |
Why did you do it? |
Who is she? |
No one |
I never thought you would cheat on me |
|
-(으)ㄹ 줄 몰랐다 ("didn't know/expect that [X] would happen") is the
future/hypothetical sibling of the -는 줄 알다 pattern from episode 8 (사람들이
너 미친 줄 안다니까) – that one described a present assumption, while this
one describes a failed expectation about something that hadn't happened yet.
|
Nothing happened |
How can I trust you? |
Tell me |
|
The English for these two rows looks swapped in the source – 사랑해 plainly
means "I love you" and 말해봐 means "Tell me," so the two translations appear
to have been transposed by mistake rather than deliberately reordered.
|
I love you |
But still, you did what you did. Who was she? |
I said no one |
What did you like about her? |
I didn’t like her |
Tell me, what was it like to be with her? |
Let’s stop talking about it |
Is she pretty? |
I’m sorry |
Why did you do it? |
Who is she? |
How old is she? |
What does she do? |
Did you love her? |
Does she know about me? |
How did you break up with her |
Does she know? |
Why the heck did you meet her? |
Did you break up with her at all? |
Did you tell her how long we’ve been together? |
So tell me, how was it to be with her? |
Is she pretty? |
Tell me what she is like |
what she is good at |
what made you attracted to her, and why you fell for her |
But if I ask you these, I will look ridiculous |
If I’m not being cool with it, and being sloshy |
|
구질구질하다 describes something shabby, messy, or pathetic – often used,
as here, for clingy or undignified behaviour rather than physical mess. The
English "sloshy" is a bit of an odd/nonstandard word choice for it; "pathetic"
or "sloppy" would land closer to the intended meaning.
|
I will look miserable like you |
|
하찮다 means "insignificant" or "not worth much" – here used reflexively
(하찮아지다, "to become insignificant/small") to describe how she'd feel about
herself if she let herself act as pitifully as he's currently acting.
|
So, if I go out with you again |
I’ll think of her every time I see you |
I know that |
That’s why I’m not going to see you |
But I am still waiting for you |
|
The chain of -(으)면서 above (알면서, 않을거면서) is being used contrastively
here, "even though/despite" – "even though I know that, even though I'm
not going to see you, [I still find myself] waiting for you like this." It's
the same connector as -(으)면서도 from episode 6, just without the emphatic 도.
|
Is it because my heart wants you? |
|
-아/어서일까 tacks the speculative question ending -(으)ㄹ까 onto a "because"
clause (-아/어서) to ask "could it be because...?" – a genuinely uncertain,
self-questioning tone, fitting for the episode's title and closing line.
|
Or just because |
my body seeks you? |
Is it my heart, or my body that wants you? #We_broke_up_but_I_miss_you |
